Designathon:

DoorDash

Project Overview

This designathon was held at UC Berkeley by Design @ Berkeley x UX @ Berkeley in partnership with Adobe and DoorDash. Starting at 9AM, we were given 8 hours of brainstorming, ideating, and drafting a mid-fidelity design. Afterwards, we gave a quick pitch of our design to the panel of judges. Out of 30+ teams, our team placed 3rd in the designathon. 🥉

How might DoorDash enable college students to be more conscious of their health and diet?

Our prompt is as follows: “DoorDash’s mission is to revolutionize the food delivery service by providing a convenient and health-conscious experience for all users, especially college students. They aim to promote food transparency through features like clear nutritional information, meal recommendations, balanced options, calorie tracking, meal planning tools, and affordable healthy choices. However, college students still struggle to eat healthily due to limited options, busy schedules, and tight budgets. Your mission is to design an experience for users that will help them take better care of their health.”

Our Design Process

What’s next?

Brainstorming

Our team decided to use Google Docs to jot down our initial thoughts and ideas about our next steps. We did our competitive analysis, notes on the current DoorDash flow, product feature ideas, and improved workflow. This document can be accessed here.

Competitive Analysis

We first did a competitive analysis on other popular food delivery/order applications, making sure to note any health features, the organization of the items, and any limitations. This helped us ideate possible features to enhance and promote healthy and social eating habits through DoorDash.

The main insights from competitive analysis:

  • dietary filters/preferences are a standard feature on most food delivery apps.

  • nutritional transparency is often overlooked in most apps — no calorie range, vegan/gluten-free/halal options, or any health-related features.

  • Default organization of food is usually by recommendations/deals.

Sketches

My team collectively sketched filter placement ideas and the display/organization of healthy dish options.

Ideation

Consider User and Business Goals

Reflections

It is important to not only consider user goals, but also business goals! The panel was pleased we produced a design that would benefit both the user and the business.

Timeframe Pressure

Due to the limited timeframe, my team and I had to rapidly brainstorm, ideate, and iterate solutions. Through this process, we learned the importance of quick decision-making, teamwork, and user-centric thinking.

With a chance to expand on the design, I would conduct user surveys and initial usability tests to better understand users’ pain points within the scope of healthy eating habits. I would also have a more in-depth iterative process complete with a low-fidelity wireframe and a high-fidelity prototype. Finally, I would conduct a final usability test to ensure users’ needs and the problem statement were addressed.

My Role

This was my first time participating in a design sprint, my roles are as follows:

  • completed the competitive analysis and added sketches of filter options and placement.

  • designed the new health filter bottom sheet popup.

  • presented on our team’s new features to a panel of judges from DoorDash and Adobe.

New Filter Options

Customizable health filter is placed alongside existing filters.

Bottom sheet popup features healthy nutritional preferences, dietary restrictions, and a scrollable calorie range.

Tackles: Inadequate nutritional transparency

Health Banners & Dish Display

Banners displayed underneath the restaurant are based on chosen health filters.

Featured healthy dishes are displayed in a horizontal scroll fashion at the bottom.

Tackles: Overlooked dietary preferences & restrictions

Group Order Discounts & Rewards

Group order screen displays bar that gives more discounts the more friends join a healthy group order — incentivizes healthier eating.

Tackles: Social eating habits
